De vraag is of erkenning naar Fries model moet komen of een beleid gebaseerd op een door de nationale overheid aangeboden convenant. Limburgs, erkend als regionale taal onder het Europees Handvest sinds 1997, heeft minder rechten dan Fries. De Nederlandse overheid is haar verplichtingen voor Limburgs sindsdien niet nagekomen. Een voorgestelde convenant mist afdwingbaarheid en maakt Limburgs afhankelijk van wisselende politieke wil. Dit kan de bescherming van de Raad van Europa ondermijnen.
