Hoewel het Limburgs in 1997 werd erkend onder het Europees Handvest voor regionale talen en talen van minderheden (Handvest), is er tot nu toe weinig actief taalbeleid gevoerd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De verantwoordelijkheid voor taalbeleid is door de nationale overheid grotendeels bij de provincie gelegd, hoewel de nationale overheid volgens internationaal recht verantwoordelijk blijft. Het document benadrukt dat de provincie Limburg, eventueel samen met gemeenten, actief taalbeleid kan voeren, ook zonder nationale overheid.
